Vacations in Abruzzo: more than just the sea

The breathtaking Abruzzo coast

Clear, shallow water near the shore, clean sand for building castles, lifeguards, colorful games, spaces for changing diapers or breastfeeding, and the nearby presence of ice cream parlors, drinking establishments, and restaurants. Here’s the profile of the Italian beaches recommended by pediatricians.
Among the 134 summer resorts suitable for children and families, there is also Silvi Marina.
The prestigious award returns for the third time to the City that inspired the famous Canzone del Sole along its entire coastline. The 2016 award was characterized by the high number of pediatricians involved in the evaluation, thus ensuring a heterogeneous, congruent and significant statistical sample. The parameters that most determined the selection were the water quality and the possibility of bathing, checking the mayors’ ordinances and the findings of the regional Arpa, which are the facilities in charge of such controls; in addition, an effort was made to include all those locations with characteristics still pristine, in which nature prevails over tourist facilities.

The Abruzzo coastline is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in Italy; although it is a less crowded tourist area than others, it certainly has nothing to envy in terms of natural beauty. This is a truly extensive coastline: there are over 130 kilometers of coast characterized by beautiful landscapes, as well as a wide range of accommodation facilities that can satisfy tourists of all kinds. Suggestive itineraries

Between sea & mountains

It is such a varied landscape, the one that frames the cities and ancient villages of Abruzzo, that a lifetime would not be enough to explore and admire the infinite beauty of this region so wonderfully wild and unspoiled. From lakes to nature reserves, from the sea to the mountains, from the countryside to the inland areas, every day it is possible to immerse yourself in a completely new and unexpected scenery, within an hour’s drive you can reach the national parks of the Majella and the Gran Sasso, the beaches of Pescara or those of the other coastal towns, the country farmhouses, and the natural lakes that rise at the foot of the Apennine ridge mountains.

All that remains is to venture out to discover the ancient villages of Abruzzo, first and foremost Scanno, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio. Also not to be missed are the castles, such as those in Avezzano, Celano, Balsorano, Anversa degli Abruzzi and Pacentro, and the hermitages of San Bartolomeo, San Giovanni and Santa Croce al Morrone. Also a must for the thousands of tourists are the many convents (Madonna del Carmine and Ritiro della Santissima Annunziata del Poggio in primis) and shrines, such as that of San Gabriele dell’Addolorata and Volto Santo in Manoppello. Finally, the abbeys of San Giovanni in Venere, San Liberatore a Majella, and San Clemente a Casauria are not to be missed. Their grandeur and beauty are well worth the journey to reach them.

And if, while touring among these wonderful places of worship, you happen to come across one of the many festivals that make this region an important cultural hub, don’t hesitate to stop by.
